Worlfood International in Bangkok Post Newspaper

World Foods International Co is forging ahead with plans to distribute its Thai-made snacks in the Middle East this year after achieving some export success in other markets over the past two years.

As a small and medium-sized enterprise, the company's marketing activities in the overseas market remain very limited,'' said Kanya Tilokruangchai, the founder and managing director of the company, which males extruded potato and corn snacks under several brands including Potato, Dumbo, Nani and Jonny. ``We still rely mainly on international trade exhibitions held by the Export Promotion Department.''

Taking part in the department's frequent events has paid off _ the company made its export debut to Middle East markets such as Kuwait, Oman and Saudi Arabia at the end of last year.
Two years ago, the company began marketing its products in Laos, Cambodia, Burma and South Africa. It is also preparing to enter India.
Exports currently earn the company about two million baht a month, according to Ms Kanya.

Though export revenues might seem modest and sales to the Middle East have hit snags including a 20% rise in transport costs due to the Iraq war, Ms Kanya remains upbeat about the company's potential in the region.

For one thing, the company's products have been certified as Halal foods for Muslims, and it is in the process of upgrading to obtain Good Manufacturing Practice certification.

Founded in 1994 with registered capital of 10 million baht, World Foods International now operates a factory occupying 3,000 square metres in Samut Sakhon province, with 120 workers.
The company uses granulated potatoes, wheat flour, tapioca starch and corn starch to make 10 brands of snacks in various shapes including tubes, twists, hearts, elephants and corrugated chips.

World Foods International claims a 10% share of the local snack market, which was worth about 12 billion baht last year. Frito-Lay is the leader in the market, which has about 2,000 snack manufacturers, most of them small enterprises.
